about Sulaimani

The city of Sulaimani in Sulaimani Province is one of the major cities in both Kurdistan Region and Iraq. The city is situated 385 Km north of Baghdad and 198 Km northeast of Erbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan Region.

The city is surrounded by a range of mountains, the Azmer Range, Goyija Range, and the Qaiwan Range in the north east, Baranan Mountain in the south and the Tasluja Hills in the west. the city was founded by Ibrahim Pasha in 1784. 

The city is the cultural capital of Kurdistan Region of Iraq and center of great poets, writers, historians, politicians, scholars, and singers. The Sulaimani province has many historic and archaeological sites such as Bestansur Neolithic settlement, one of the world’s earliest built settlements that have been recently added to UNESCO’s World Heritage tentative list, and Hazar Merd cave where Palaeolithic remnants from 50,000 BC was found.

 Visitors of the city describe it as an open and liberal city with great hospitality and friendliness towards foreigners and non-local visitors.
